Community Liaison

WeCode24 is a coding programme designed to inspire a hacker culture of curiosity, creativity and agency among South African youth.

We are looking for an engaging Community Liaison, to go champion our programme at schools, to visit and foster the learner communities, and to be the public-facing representative of the programme.

The person filling this position must be a confident, extroverted individual, with high emotional intelligence and great interpersonal skills — which to us are more important than other credentials.

Responsibilities and duties

  • Roll out the WeCode programme: do presentations, arrange and host launch events.
  • Visit and foster the WeCode clubs at local venues and online.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with partner organisations.
  • Assist with planning and hosting of larger WeCode events.
  • Provide regular feedback to the rest of the team on what is happening on the ground.

Qualities and work ethic

  • Dynamic and independent, takes ownership — will be operating in a startup culture as an integral part of the team.
  • Confident, positive, engaging and enthusiastic, with great interpersonal skills. Comfortable working with people from all backgrounds. Respectful, and has integrity.
  • Organised, punctual and dependable, but also flexible.
  • Willing and eager to learn on the job.
  • Comfortable traveling on their own to different areas in and around Cape Town, carrying and setting up equipment, etc.
  • Cares greatly about the learners.

Skills, experience, education

  • Excellent English communication and presentation skills and etiquette. Being multilingual is an advantage — Afrikaans and/or Xhosa specifically.
  • Driving License (Code B) is essential. Entails a lot of driving, to partners, clubs, events, etc. Having your own vehicle is an advantage — a car, not a motorcycle, for transporting equipment. All travel expenses will of course be covered.
  • Basic computer literacy required.
  • Post Matric qualification preferred.
  • First-hand experience working with high school learners from historically under-served communities is an advantage.

Arrangement

To start immediately. Permanent full-time employment after a three-month probation period.

Remuneration

From R7 500 to R20 500 per month, commensurate with the candidate's skills and experience.

Location

Based in Firgrove, Somerset West, serving the Cape Town metropolitan and surrounding areas.
